King's Christmas message: Charles delivers message of hope amid wars, battle with cancer
Despite his increased absence from the public eye in 2024 as he continues to fight cancer, King Charles III has delivered his third Christmas message since ascending the throne. From the Chapel of the former Middlesex Hospital in London, the monarch sent a powerful message of hope on Wednesday. In his opening remarks, Charles recalled this year’s 80th anniversary of V-Day and commemorated the soldiers who fought in the Second World War. Though he shared how touching the ceremony was, the King expressed disappointment that, unlike previous commemorations, global citizens are no longer able to “console [themselves] with the thoughts that these tragic events seldom happen in the modern era.” “On this Christmas Day, we cannot help but think of those for whom the devastating effects of conflict — in the Middle East, in Central Europe, in Africa — and elsewhere, pose a daily threat to so many peoples’ lives and livelihood,” Charles said of wars raging across the globe. Charles also said those who dedicate their lives to helping others make the greatest impression on himself and the royal family. He later thanked the general public and “selfless doctors and nurses” for helping he and “other members of [his] family through the uncertainties and anxieties of illness.” Charles was making an indirect reference to his daughter-in-law, Kate Middleton, as she continues to recover from cancer, following a year of intense treatment.
