Kiteezi landfill scare alert - KCCA orders immediate evacuation near Kiteezi dumping site
Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), along with the Ministry of Health, has ordered residents near the Kiteezi dumping site to evacuate immediately due to the risk of the dump overflowing, which could lead to loss of life. Dr. Sarah Zalwango, Acting Health Director, warned that the drainage water from the spring poses a serious health risk, potentially causing outbreaks of diseases. The area remains dangerous following a previous waste fall that claimed over 35 lives, and further cracking could lead to another waste collapse. KCCA officials, led by Minister Hajjat Minsa Kabanda, emphasized the urgency of the evacuation, particularly for those collecting materials from the dump and homeowners reluctant to leave. Dr. Andrew from the Ministry of Health noted that samples of the water are being tested for harmful bacteria. Residents, represented by Hajji Sirajje Namatiiti, expressed fears of possible floods and requested that the government build a fence around the dump without interfering with their homes.
