National Farmers’ Federation President David Jochinke says there is a “bit of a disconnect” between the ambitions of the Albanese government’s fuel efficiency standards and “reality”. The Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries has warned that the Albanese government's proposed fuel efficiency standards could cost as much as $38 billion in the first five years. “We’re absolutely talking about the work vehicles – the tools of our trade,” Mr Jochinke told Sky News Australia. “What we’re seeing is a bit of a disconnect between what the ambitions are of some of this proposed legislation and the reality of what this means for farmers. “To be quite honest, the ute is one of the most important pieces of equipment we have on the farm, and we need to make sure we’ve got something that is powerful enough and that’s also built for the Australian conditions.”
