Labour calls for continued funding of UNRWA programmes in Gaza amid 'humanitarian catastrophe
The UK and several other countries paused funding to the UN Relief and Works Agency in Gaza on Friday after "several" staff members were fired for allegedly participating in the 7 October attack on Israel. Asked for Labour's view, the party's shadow paymaster general Jonathan Ashworth said the allegations were "absolutely appalling" but he also said a "humanitarian catastrophe" is facing Palestinians in Gaza and called for more aid to be delivered to the strip. He said: "What is happening is a catastrophe which is why, for example, we've also called for a halt in the fighting, an immediate humanitarian truce, a ceasefire, a sustained ceasefire is needed, but UNRWA programs have to continue.
