Laken Riley murder: Victim's family speaks out as Jose Ibarra found guilty, sentenced to life
Jose Ibarra was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole on Wednesday in the murder of Laken Riley, a 22-year-old nursing student in Georgia. Ibarra, 26, a Venezuelan man who came to the U.S. illegally, was convicted on three counts of felony murder and counts of malice murder, kidnapping with bodily injury and aggravated assault with intent to rape and “peeping tom.” In victim impact statements that followed the verdict, Riley’s mother and sister called Ibarra a “monster” and the “epitome of evil.” The murder of Riley became a flashpoint in the immigration debate earlier this year, after her case was invoked by U.S. President-elect Donald Trump and other politicians.
