Latin American women protest to denounce gender violence
Women across major Latin American cities took to the streets to protest against gender violence on Monday (November 25), marking the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. In places like Mexico City and Bolivia protesters demanded government action and justice, while those marching in Bogota and Santiago protested against sexual violence towards underage girls. In Argentina, protesters voiced their opposition to President Javier Milei, known for his criticism of feminist movements and for abolishing government institutions that assist women and other minorities. The demonstrators wore purple, a color symbolizing the regional 'Ni una menos' ('Not one less') movement against femicide, and orange, associated with the fight against gender violence. The United Nations reports that at least 11 women fall victim to femicide daily in Latin America and the Caribbean.
