Liberals accuse Conservatives of “witch hunt” over so-called ‘green slush fund’

Canada's Government House Leader Karina Gould accused the Conservatives of a “witch hunt” as the Tories continue to push for records related to the Sustainable Development Technologies Canada (STDC) organization, after the Auditor General found that the now-defunct organization broke conflict of interest rules and made “significant lapses” in managing public funds. Conservatives have taken to calling the STDC, which was federally funded but at arm’s length from government, a “green slush fund.” In June, a Conservative motion demanded the government turn over all documents related to the STDC to the House of Commons law clerk within 30 days. The clerk would then turn them over to the RMCP. When not all documents were turned over by deadline, Conservative House Leader Andrew Scheer claimed the House’s privileges were violated — a claim House Speaker Greg Fergus found was well founded. “This is a typical witch hunt from the leader of the Opposition to go after people who had nothing to do with this. These are files such as personnel files that contain private information of individuals who have nothing to do with what is going on,” said Gould during question period in the House of Commons Wednesday. Conservatives have lamented that the House of Commons has remained “paralyzed” as the party extends a debate about turning over the documents to the RCMP.
