Literacy skills in Singapore adults decline as early as the late 20s: OECD study
Singapore's ranking in an international study on adult literacy, numeracy and problem-solving has improved. The survey, which runs every 10 years by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), measures how adults use their skills at home and at work. While literacy scores for adults in Singapore remained steady, they were still below the OECD average. There was also a noticeable decline in skills, starting at an earlier age. Associate Professor Loh Chin Ee, an Associate Dean at the National Institute of Education, talks about the results from the OECD survey. She shares specific areas of concern, how the results concern a multi-lingual society like Singapore and why the decline in literacy at an early age could be a cause for concern. She also shares possible ways to reverse this trend.
