Coral reefs in the Maldives are facing a multitude of threats due to climate change. Rising sea temperatures and rapid coastal development have endangered their survival, leading to a decline in marine biodiversity. Sea surface temperatures in the Indian Ocean have risen 50% faster than the global average over the past 50 years. This has resulted in coral bleaching, a phenomenon caused by rapidly warming waters. Scientists and locals in the Maldives are working together to protect and restore the vital coral reefs. Afifah Ariffin reports.
