In a violent incident at Istanbul's Italian Santa Maria Catholic Church, Tuncer Murat Cihan was killed by Islamic State gunmen during a service. The attack, partially stopped by a weapon jam, resulted in the arrest of the assailants and several others. Tuncer, who was just visiting the church, had no known political or religious ties. The event was captured on CCTV, revealing the presence of other notable individuals, including the Polish consul general. The church displayed signs of the attack with bullet holes and memorials. The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack. Tuncer, the victim, belonged to the Alevi community, a religious group with a mix of Shi'ite Muslim, Sufi, and traditional Anatolian beliefs. His funeral was held at a cemevi, a place of worship for Alevis.
