This week on American Black Journal: Examine the high number of maternal deaths in Michigan and the disproportionate impact on Black mothers as highlighted in an in-depth report by The Detroit News and produced through the New York and Michigan Solutions Journalism Collaborative. Host Stephen Henderson speaks with Dawn Shanafelt, Director of the Division of Maternal & Infant Health in the Michigan Department of Health & Human Services. Then, Henderson gets details on the new Summer Discovery program presented by United Way for Southeastern Michigan and Ballmer Group to curb learning loss and bridge educational disparities. The free learning program provides K-8 students in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties with a chance to take part in a variety of academic and enrichment activities over the summer.
