Former Florida congressman Matt Gaetz has hinted at a 2026 gubernatorial run after withdrawing as Trump’s Attorney General nominee. Gaetz stepped down from Congress after Trump advised him he lacked the votes for Senate confirmation, despite being reelected for another term in 2024. Former Florida Rep. Anthony Sabatini fuelled speculation by posting on X that Gaetz “will be the next Governor of Florida,” to which Gaetz responded with a GIF of the state flag. With Governor Ron DeSantis leaving office in January 2027 due to term limits, Florida’s 2026 gubernatorial race could see Gaetz leveraging Trump’s endorsement in a solidly red state.
