Memorial for former President Jimmy Carter begins in Georgia | ABS-CBN News

Former US President Jimmy Carter’s state funeral began on Saturday (January 4) with ceremonies in his home state of Georgia. Carter will lie in repose there until being flown to Washington, D.C., on Tuesday (January 7). At approximately 3 p.m. (Eastern Time), Carter’s motorcade arrived in Atlanta and made a stop at Georgia’s State Capitol, where state dignitaries greeted Carter’s eldest son John "Jack" Carter and grandson Jason Carter. The motorcade then proceeded to the Carter Presidential Library, where a military honor guard received the casket. Family members addressed attendees at the Library. “He was an amazing man, and he was held up and propped up and soothed by an amazing woman (Carter’s wife, Rosalynn Carter). And the two of them together changed the world. And it was an amazing thing to work from so close and to be able to be involved. And thank you for your service,” said Carter’s second son James "Chip" Carter. Grandson Jason Carter added, “It was important for all of us that we stop here. These buildings, as you all know, are filled with his life. Not just because this is a museum to his life, and not just because there’s a collection here of his beloved paintings, but his spirit fills this place.” Following the funeral service in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday, Carter will be flown back to Georgia and buried in a private ceremony in his hometown of Plains.
