Mexico threatens it will raise tariffs if Trump moves forward with his own
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said on Wednesday Mexico would retaliate if U.S. President-elect Donald Trump followed through with his proposed 25 per cent across-the-board tariff, a move her government warned could kill 400,000 U.S. jobs. "If there are U.S. tariffs, Mexico would also raise tariffs," Sheinbaum said during her regular morning press conference. Sheinbaum also expressed confidence in the continuity of the USMCA (United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement), highlighting its benefits for all three economies involved. "What (the Secretary of Economy) is preparing is - in case there are tariffs - Mexico would also raise tariffs, so it is a technical work that would also represent benefits for Mexico in the event of a situation like this," Sheinbaum added.
