Former White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney has labelled Iran’s attack on Israel as “unprovoked”. The US has broken ranks with one of its biggest allies after it told Israel it will not participate in any retaliatory action against Iran following hundreds of strikes over the weekend. It is Tehran’s first-ever direct attack on its neighbour. Israel says more than 300 missiles and drones were fired by Iran, Iraq, Syria and Yemen, but most were intercepted before entering Israeli airspace. “Iran is not well-liked amongst many in the Shia world, so that’s probably not surprising,” Mr Mulvaney told Sky News Australia. “An unprovoked attack, again, from the Iranian mainland, from the country itself – this was not a proxy attack. “This came straight from Iran itself, which was the first time in history, so it’s probably not surprising to see Jordan reach out to help defend Israel as well.”
