Millions for military aid to Africa shows Beijing moving past traditional development help: Analyst

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday (Sep 5) pledged more than US$50 billion in funding for Africa over the next three years, including US$140 million in military aid. Bates Gill, senior fellow for Asian security at American think tank National Bureau of Asian Research, noted that China’s assistance includes training and exchanges for military and law enforcement personnel, as well as more security-related exports to Africa. He tells CNA’s East Asia Tonight that China’s interest to expand security-related activities and cooperation with African countries is new.
