Captagon was the brand name of a psychoactive medicine produced in the 1960s. It contains fenethylline, a synthetic drug. By the 1980s it was banned in most countries because of its highly addictive nature and side effects. It's estimated around 80% of Captagon worldwide was produced in Syria under the command of the Assad regime. Assad is believed to have made billions of dollars from its sale. Joshua Landis, the Director of the Center for Middle East Studies at the University of Oklahoma, joins Al Jazeera’s live from Oklahoma City.
