Three years after a brazen shooting at a Mississauga, Ont., fast food restaurant, three men are now on trial. They're facing charges of first degree murder and five counts of attempted murder — and the suspects may have allegedly pledged allegiance to a terrorist organization. According to Crown prosecutors, the three men on trial for killing Naim Akl were his friends and shared a devout following of the Muslim faith. But when Akl discovered they had allegedly pledged allegiance to ISIS and were sending money to fund the cause, the Crown says they had a falling out and he became a target after the three men learned he was planning to go to the authorities. It was May 29, 2021, when a hooded masked man was captured on video walking into the Chicken Land restaurant and opened fire, fatally shooting 25-year-old Akl and wounding his brother, his mother, his father and friend, and missing Akl's younger sister. Eighteen seconds later, the shooter fled the scene, jumping into the trunk of a getaway car before speeding off. Global’s Catherine McDonald has more from the Brampton courthouse.
