Moon gazing: The first supermoon of the year lights up the night sky

People in cities around the world, from Sydney, Australia to Istanbul, Turkey, were able to catch a glimpse of the first supermoon of the year Monday as it lit up the night sky. The moon appeared bigger and brighter than usual as a blue moon and super moon coincided. This type of moon is traditionally referred to as a sturgeon moon. Monday’s supermoon is the first of four straight blue supermoons, with the next ones set for September, October and November.
