NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory captured the most powerful solar flare emitted by the sun since 2017, according to Space.com, on Thursday, October 3. Footage released by NASA shows imagery of the event, which was classed as an X9.0 flare. “Solar flares are powerful bursts of energy. Flares and solar eruptions can impact radio communications, electric power grids, navigation signals, and pose risks to spacecraft and astronauts,” NASA wrote. According to NASA, the flare peaked at 8:18 am Eastern Time on Thursday. Space.com reported that the same sunspot which had emitted the X9.0 flare had also emitted an X7.1 flare on October 1. According to NASA, X-class denotes the most intense flares.
