Move to transition Special Constables into ranks of TBPS

Government is making a major move to transition Special Constables into the ranks of the Barbados Police Service. Minister in the Ministry of Finance Ryan Straughn, speaking during the 2025 Budget presentation, says after consultations with the Commissioner of Police, from financial year 2025-2026 Special Constables who have served in that capacity for more than three years will automatically be transitioned into the Police Service as full time officers if they want to do so. He says the Constables will perform their usual duties but will also be assigned to directly supporting maintainance of social order, focusing on unregulated vending, illegal dumping and road safety management.
