MPS OPPOSE PROPOSAL TO DECLARE CIVIL MARRIAGE POLYGAMOUS
The marriage bill 2024 moved by Tororo woman member of parliament seeks to provides that civil marriage be declared as polygamous. However, during consultations of the bill in legal committee of parliament some MPS said this will affect the law is being applied to the already existing civil marriage and lead to men avoiding church marriages. The legal committee of parliament has commenced the process of scrutinizing the marriage bill 2024 after being introduced to the house for the first reading where there was a heated debate on parental consent. The mover of the bill member of parliament Tororo Sarah Opendi said it seeks to reform and consolidate the legislations on marriage that came before Uganda attained independence and also align them to the 1995 constitution.
