“Murderers!”: Spain residents hurl mud at royals as crowds vent anger over flood deaths
Hundreds of Spanish residents in a Valencia suburb hit by last week's deadly floods protested Sunday, during a visit by Spanish King Felipe, Queen Letizia, and Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez. During heated moments, some residents threw mud at the royal family, while others chanted "Murderers, murderers!" The crowds vented pent-up anger over what has been widely perceived by local residents as tardy alerts from authorities about the dangers of the flooding, and a late response by emergency services. As of Sunday, the death toll from the country's worst flash floods in modern history edged higher to 217. "Please, the dead are still in the garages, the families are looking for their relatives and friends. Please come, we only ask for help," said one tearful resident, Nuria Chisber. “We are fed up, you understand? Fed up. That's all we wanted, we just wanted to be warned and we would have been saved.” At different points in the visit to the Paiporta suburb, King Felipe hugged a man who was crying, while Queen Letizia cried after a resident said that the protests were not aimed at her. Navigating through crowds of people, bodyguards had opened umbrellas to try to protect the royals.
