Nation Update: Diara Springer takes Shirley Chisholm prize

Congratulations to our young reporter Diara Springer, who captured the top prize in the Shirley Chisholm Arts Competition. She performed the spoken word piece Chisholm’s Tapestry at the Awards Ceremony. There were 30 entrants in the public category and Diara earned a trip to New York. The competition was part of Celebrating Shirley – 100 years, commemorating what would have been her centennial year. She became the first black woman to be elected to congress and in 1972, also became the first black woman to vie for a presidential nomination.
