NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte announced Tuesday the military alliance will deploy frigates, patrol aircraft and naval drones to the Baltic Sea to help protect critical infrastructure following multiple incidents of sabotage to undersea cables. In December, Finnish police seized an oil tanker carrying Russian oil under suspicion it had damaged the Finnish Estonian Estlink 2 power line and four telecoms cables by dragging its anchor along the sea floor. “Ship captains must understand that potential threats to our infrastructure will have consequences, including possible boarding, impounding and arrest,” said Rutte. “And while such law enforcement roles are for national authorities, we are best served when there is a complementarity between NATO’s efforts to detect threats and deter aggression and national efforts to enforce the law," he added. Speaking after a security meeting of NATO members, Finland’s prime minister, Alexander Stubb, said the investigation into the latest breach in the Baltic Sea is still underway but added that countries need to adapt to a “new normal” in the region.
