Neo-Nazi networks increasing, Scholz says as Germans gather to protest far-right AfD party
On the 79th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp operated during the Second World War, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz voiced his concern about an increase in extreme-right tendencies in Germany. “More and more reports are emerging about neo-Nazis and their dark networks. And at the same time, right-wing populists are gaining ground, stirring up fear and sowing hatred,” Scholz said on Saturday. The Social Democrat’s sentiments followed recent nationwide protests across the country against the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, which were triggered by reports that two senior members took part in a meeting which involved plans of a mass deportation of foreign citizens. “A ban won't change the attitudes of people who vote for the AfD. But we could escape this danger of the AfD sitting in parliaments,” protester Stephan Nietfeld said during an AfD protest in Düsseldorf.
