Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is urging the United Nations (UN) to pull out its peacekeeping force from Lebanon, as the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) continues its military campaign against the Iran-backed Hezbollah militant group. “Your refusal to evacuate UNIFIL (United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon) soldiers makes them hostages in the hands of Hezbollah. It endangers them as well as our soldiers,” Netanyahu said in a video message released on Sunday. Five UNIFIL workers have been injured in three separate incidents since Thursday – the same day Israel conducted its largest airstrike in Lebanon in over a year of conflict. 22 people in central Beirut were killed in the attack, which was reported as a failed attempt to kill a senior Hezbollah leader. “We are sorry for the harm to UNIFIL soldiers and are doing everything we can to prevent such harm. But the simple and obvious way to ensure that is to just pull them out of the danger zone,” Netanyahu concluded.
