Newly appointed Canadian Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc defended the federal government’s Fall Economic Statement in the House of Commons Tuesday, saying the Trudeau government is “very proud” of its fiscal update. LeBlanc said the economic statement would support “Canadians with serious affordability challenges.” Conservative MP Andrew Scheer called the political turmoil resulting from former finance minister Chrystia Freeland’s bombshell resignation a “gongshow” and called the $62 billion deficit announced in the economic outlook a “gut punch to Canadians.” “They’re so proud of that fall budget that they tabled it in the House of Commons and ran,” Scheer said. Conservatives and the Bloc Quebecois both called for an election, with Bloc Quebecois Leader Yves-Francois Blanchet saying that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau “does not have the confidence of the House.” Jagmeet Singh renewed his call for Trudeau to resign but did not say whether his party would back a Conservative non-confidence motion.
