New cars sold in Canada must be zero-emission by 2035, Trudeau government announces | LIVE
Canada's federal government is expected to announce in Toronto, Ont., on Tuesday that all new cars sold in Canada must have zero emissions as of 2035, as the Trudeau government is set to unveil new regulations in the latest example of countries around the world pushing for electrification. The Canadian provinces of British Columbia and Quebec already have the same regulated sales targets. Zero-emission vehicles – which include battery electric, plug-in and hydrogen models – must represent 20 per cent of all new car sales in 2026, 60 per cent in 2030 and 100 per cent in 2035, a government source told Reuters on condition of anonymity. Global EV sales now make up about 13 per cent of all vehicle sales and are likely to rise to between 40-45 per cent of the market by the end of the decade, according to the Paris-based International Energy Agency (IEA).
