The Food and Agriculture Organisation and the Barbados Fisheries Division are embarking on an initiative to benefit local fishermen and others in the fishing industry. It's the Upscaling Fish Waste Utilisation Project. Speaking at the launch, Chief Fisheries Officer Dr. Shelly-Ann Cox says it comes after many other programmes dealing with fish silage over five years ago. According to her, they are looking to build a circular economy where the industry is concerned. The FAO's involvement is to assist with sustaining the initiative, as well as to provide training for those in the sector to deal with the end waste so that it does not negatively impact the environment. Dr. Yvette Diei Ouadi, Fishery Industry Officer with the FAO Fisheries and Aquaculture Department, spoke to their role in the project.
