A U.S. Army veteran who drove a pickup truck into a crowd of New Year’s revellers in New Orleans, killing 14 people, was "100% inspired" by the Islamic State group, police confirmed on Thursday. Governor Jeff Landry and officials from the FBI, LSP, NOPD, ATF, and the US Attorney's Office provided an update on the brazen attack being investigated as an act of terrorism. Officials clarified that they believed he was the only one involved. Federal investigators identified Shamsud-Din Jabbar, 42, as the man who intentionally rammed a rented pickup into revellers around 3:15 a.m. on Bourbon Street as people were ringing in the new year. Some 35 people were left injured, some critically. The driver then exited the vehicle and exchanged gunfire with police, who shot and killed the suspect. Two officers also sustained injuries but are in stable condition, according to Anne Kirkpatrick, superintendent of the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD).
