New plan to put derelict properties back into use
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Housing, Lands and Maintenance, Niki Smith has revealed a new plan to put derelict properties back into use. Mr. Smith says as some people migrate abroad, they sometimes abandon their properties. He confirms Government is working to introduce a system which allows it to take possession of such properties, and use them to assist people who need housing. He was speaking during a High-level Meeting on Housing and Urban Development for Latin America and the Caribbean in Brazil. Mr. Smith has however made it clear that Government does not want to disadvantage the property owners who have gone overseas. He says the intention is to reach an agreement with the owners, to allow them to reclaim possession of the property when they return to the island.
