New plant to manufacture eco-friendly building materials
Government intends to construct a new plant to manufacture eco-friendly building materials. The announcement by Minister of Housing, Lands and Maintenance, Dwight Sutherland, came as he addressed a regional housing forum in Brazil, the 33rd General Assembly of Ministers and High-Level Authorities of Housing and Urban Development for Latin America and the Caribbean. Mr. Sutherland says the plant will make autoclaved aerated concrete, which is a lightweight, green and durable building material. He told the Assembly the aircrete will be used along with the light gauge steel structures being constructed. Mr. Sutherland says Government intends to build 3000 houses using these materials over the next two years. He says the benefits will include greater energy efficiency. Mr. Sutherland has been elected as President of the 34th General Assembly of Ministers and High-Level Authorities of Housing and Urban Development for Latin America and the Caribbean. The significant development will see Barbados hosting the Assembly for the first time next year.
