The Barbados Private Sector Association (BPSA) has made its feelings public on the Labour Clauses (Concessions) Bill. The BPSA has made it clear it has no intention of suppressing the rights of workers. However, Chairman Trisha Tannis says they believe the proposed legislation should have been a last resort and only implemented to address widespread mistreatment of employees across various sectors benefitting from concessions. The proposed legislation will allow the Government to shape the minimum terms and conditions of work for businesses operating in sectors receiving concessions. Businesses found in contravention could have their privileges suspended or revoked Ms Tannis says the BPSA has been given the assurance by the Government that they will be given the opportunity to consult on the regulation that will frame the Bill.
