How fast is 5/1000th of a second? The Paris Olympics 100m finish was so close, Noah Lyles actually congratulated Jamaica's Kishane Thompson on the track after the race as competition officials worked out who won the photo finish. In the end, Lyles' 9.784-second time was just five-thousandths of a tick of the clock better than Thompson's. That's half of a strobe light flash, 1/20 of a human eye blink and 0.4 flaps of a hummingbird's wings. The excruciatingly thin margin made Lyles the first American to win the Olympic men's 100m since Justin Gatlin in 2004.
