The Nobel Peace Prize was awarded on Friday to a Japanese organization of survivors of the U.S. atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945. Though the victory was an unexpected but welcomed surprise for the group Nihon Hidankyo, its leaders believe they were picked as the winner to help send a global message about the risks of a modern-day nuclear war. Speaking in Tokyo on Saturday, Nihon Hidankyo Secretary General Masako Wada said, "In the current nuclear climate, I think the Nobel Committee's Chairman belief was that global citizens, humanity, must think seriously about eliminating nuclear weapons." Wada warned that Japan could be pulled into a nuclear conflict through a long-debated and controversial sharing agreement with the U.S., in which American weapons could be based on Japanese soil. Though the agreement is not currently in place, Russian President Vladimir Putin recently suggested that Moscow would consider utilizing its nuclear weapons if the U.S., or other Western allies allow Ukraine to strike deep inside Russia with long-range missiles amid the countries’ ongoing war.
