North Korea airs test of intercontinental ballistic missile with “potential” to carry multiple nukes
North Korea’s state-run television has aired footage of what it claims to be Thursday’s test of a new intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) — dubbed Hwasong-19. The new solid-fuel missile reportedly flew the highest altitude (7,000 km) and the longest duration (86 minutes) in the history of North Korean test missile launches. It flew about 1,000 km before splashing down in the ocean, between Japan and Russia. North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un and his daughter were seen watching the missile launch on-site, near Pyongyang. Though concerns remain about North Korea's ability to guide its latest ICBM — and simultaneously protect a nuclear warhead upon atmospheric re-entry — the Hwasong-19 is capable of striking almost anywhere in the U.S. For future missile tests, Dong-Yup says it is expected that North Korea will try to separate nuclear warheads and have them course for different targets before the ICBM’s final re-entry phase.
