‘Not much to say’
Yesterday's bombshell revelation of the crossing of the floor by Christ Church South Member of Parliament, Ralph Thorne, continues to reverberate across the local political spectrum. There have been volumes of analysis and much speculation from political scientists to regular Barbadians and the focus tonight has been on the Christ Church East branch meeting which Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley addressed. She said all is well and the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) will continue to provide representation unabridged and uninterrupted to the people of Christ Church South. That was her declaration as she broke silence on the sudden departure of Ralph Thorne from the party. While thanking Mr Thorne for his service to the Barbados Labour Party from 2018 until now, the Prime Minister extended best wishes to him in his future endeavours. She added that other party members are in the dark about Thorne's decision to leave the BLP. Meanwhile, over in St John, the Democratic Labour Party (DLP) has not ruled out letting Ralph Thorne back into its fold. DLP leader Dr Ronnie Yearwood says the party will never close its doors to any Barbadian who wants to serve. Questions continue on the Upper House and what the composition of the Senate will be like following the swearing-in of the Opposition Leader tomorrow. We put that question to political scientist Dr. George Belle. He says the Constitution guarantees the leader of the opposition two senate appointments and once sworn in, Ralph Thorne can tell the President who his selections are. The current senate composition came to be as President Dame Sandra Mason made the appointments in the absence of an Opposition Leader. However, these individuals would have to make way for other appointees.
