On the first anniversary of Oct. 7, Palestinians in Gaza reflected on how their lives have changed in the past year. In Khan Younis, residents went about their daily lives among the levelled houses and streets, where wide areas of the enclave have been turned into wasteland. "Before Oct. 7, one had dreams. Me as a father, I have six children, my biggest burden was that I provide them with homes, I find them wives. But after Oct. 7, this came to nothing. After 58 years of work for me, same as my father — all of it was gone to dust and rocks," displaced Abu Hassan Shaheen said. "Oct. 7 became a special day in history,” said displaced Palestinian Ahmed Al-Agha. "Gaza has become an uninhabitable place, an unfit place (to live) safely at the very least, due to the destruction of everything on this land after everything in it was targeted.” Israel’s war on Hamas was triggered when the militant group attacked southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, in a raid that killed 1,200 people and in which about 250 were taken as hostages, according to Israeli tallies. Israel's subsequent military campaign has killed nearly 42,000 Palestinians and displaced nearly all of the enclave's population of 2.3 million, according to Gaza's health ministry.
