Organ recitals, choral performances and prayers: Notre-Dame re-opens with jubilant celebration

France’s Notre-Dame cathedral re-opened on Saturday (December 7) with an elaborate ceremony that included organ recitals, choral performances and prayers. “The grand organ of the Notre Dame, which had been completely restored over this period, will give back its voice, its multiple voices, its harmonies,” said Archbishop of Paris, Laurent Ulrich, speaking before the organ recital began. The cathedral’s famed pieces, including its stained glasses, the Pieta statue and the statue of Saint Louis were once again on display for the attendees to see on Saturday. On the evening of April 15, 2019, dismayed Parisians rushed to the scene and TV viewers worldwide watched horrified as the fire raged through the cathedral. Notre-Dame has since been meticulously restored, with a new spire and rib vaulting, its flying buttresses and carved stone gargoyles returned to their past glory and white stone and gold decorations shining brightly once again. Thousands of experts - from carpenters and stonemasons to stained glass window artists - worked around the clock for the last five years, using age-old methods to restore, repair or replace everything that was destroyed or damaged.
