“Out of touch”: Mayotte residents criticize Macron’s visit to cyclone-ravaged archipelago
French President Emmanuel Macron said on Friday that hecklers in a crowd were insulting France, after he was criticized for saying residents of cyclone-ravaged Mayotte would be in "deeper shit" without the country. Asked about the comments in an interview on Friday, Macron said some of the people in the crowds were RN political militants, and that he wanted to counter the opposition's narrative that France had been neglecting Mayotte. Angry residents of a Mayotte neighbourhood damaged by cyclone Chido complained that potable water had not reached them nearly a week after the storm hit the Indian Ocean archipelago, as Macron was touring the island. Health worker Meddy described Macron as “completely out of touch,” adding that, “He came to do his circus, his cinema. It's a success. He came, he saw and he did nothing but shit, I'd like to say."
