PAHO reports geographical expansion of Oropouche virus
Barbados and other regional countries have been told about the importance of collaboration among countries to address the challenges posed by the Oropouche virus, dengue and avian influenza. The advice from the Pan American Health Organisation comes as it reports the geographical expansion of Oropouche and the largest dengue epidemic since records began in 1980. Director, Dr. Jarbas Barbosa stresses when countries share information, coordinate, and support responses to diseases, lives are saved. Though PAHO has observed an increase in cases of Oropouche, the outbreak is said to be on a much smaller scale than dengue. Barbados' Ministry of Health and Wellness recently confirmed two adult cases of the Oropouche virus on island. Dr. Barbosa has also given an update on the H1N1 or avian influenza.
