Palestinians flee to Nasser hospital after Israeli military orders Khan Younis evacuation
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) ordered a mass evacuation of Palestinians from Gaza's second-largest city, Khan Younis, on Monday. The notice is prompting concerns that Israeli troops may soon return – just months after they withdrew from the southern city. The new evacuation zone includes the major aid crossing to southern Gaza, along with an aid route inside the territory that Israel has said it would safeguard. The danger zone includes Khan Younis’s European Hospital and has prompted hundreds to flee the health institution and flood the nearby Nasser Hospital, according to WHO officials. “Very sad that, yesterday, reportedly 270 patients self-evacuated along with medical staff, mainly to the Nasser medical complex. This morning more patients were evacuated and only three patients remained at the European guys' hospital and three in the ICSC field hospital,” Rik Peeperkorn, the WHO’s representative for the Occupied Palestinian Territories, said on Tuesday. Though Peeperkorn said the “hospital itself is not under evacuation orders,” he suggested health workers and locals "self-evacuated" after becoming accustomed to hospitals going from “partly-functional” to “non-functional,” following attacks by Israel's military. The IDF is said to be in the final stages of its offensive in the nearby city of Rafah – where a majority of Gazans once considered a safe haven.
