Parakeet-borne bacteria pose zoonotic threat in Chile | ABS-CBN News
Chilean scientists have uncovered a parakeet-borne bacteria with potential human health risks. The pathogen, known as "Chlamydophila psittaci", can be transmitted from monk parakeets to other birds or humans, causing a range of illnesses from mild infections similar to influenza to more severe cases, local media reported. The bacteria can be found in parakeet droppings and respiratory secretions, according to the local media. The findings were published in the Chilean Journal of Infectiology. Cristobal Briceno, a member of the research team, stated that the parakeets pose a threat to Chileans, as people often keep chicks as pets.
