Payment system ‘reform’ needed before a ban on debit card surcharges occurs

Australian Association of Convenience Stores Chief Executive Theo Foukkare discusses the government's plan to ban debit card surcharges by January 2026.  "If the surcharges do go, which we support, by the way, but only when there is reform to the payment system," Mr Foukkare told Sky News Business Editor Ross Greenwood. "What's underlying in this space is ultimately all the fees that get associated with transacting, and currently, that falls on the retailer and ultimately falls on the consumer."
