Peru declares environmental emergency after massive oil spill into Pacific Ocean
Peru has declared an environmental emergency in Piura, after state oil giant Petroperu spilled a crude oil shipment into surrounding waters of the northern region. The devastating spill occurred on Saturday at the terminal of a Talara refinery as a vessel unsuccessfully attempted pre-shipment manoeuvres. Leaking oil quickly painting several local beaches in not just Talara, but Lobitos, too. Personnel from Petroperu quickly got to work to clean up the shoreline, however, the damage caused to coastal plants, animals, the local economy, and workers’ means of a living prompted the government’s emergency declaration Thursday. Petroperu has not yet revealed how much oil was spilled, however, Peruvian environmental watchdog OEFA says it has impacted roughly 10,000 square metres of surface water in the Pacific Ocean.
