Philippine Coast Guard says sunken tanker is leaking ‘minimal’ oil

The Philippine Coast Guard reported Monday that a sunken tanker off Manila was leaking "minimal" oil as a salvage company prepared to offload its 1.4 million litres of industrial fuel cargo. Despite using booms and absorbents, authorities claim the situation isn't as severe as last year's Mindoro spill. Fishermen in Cavite report oil sheens affecting their catch. Marine scientists warn of significant environmental and livelihood damage if the oil spreads. The coastguard states the leaking valves have been sealed, reducing the slick to one kilometer, and they hope to drain the remaining fuel soon. Al Jazeera’s Barnaby Lo reports from Cavite, south of Manila.
