Physical NRIC card suitable as authenticator due to additional identifying info: Josephine Teo

The physical NRIC card is suitable as an authenticator, as it has additional identifying information such as a person’s photo and fingerprint, said Minister for Digital Development and Information Josephine Teo in parliament on Wednesday (Jan 8). “Organisations must know that the physical NRIC card and NRIC number are two different things. The physical NRIC card can be an authenticator, but the NRIC number should not be used as an authenticator,” said Ms Teo. Ms Teo was addressing questions raised by MPs on the government's policy on NRIC numbers and a recent incident where NRIC numbers were disclosed on the Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority’s Bizfile service.
