Pope Francis leads Singapore Mass as Asia tour ends: “What humanity can achieve”

Pope Francis presided over a Mass in Singapore's National Stadium on Thursday, for the final leg of his Asia tour. The mass drew tens of thousands of people, with people queuing outside the stadium for at least five hours before the start of the event, under tight security measures. Many were wearing white and yellow, the colours of the Vatican flag. In his remarks, the 87-year-old pontiff urged political leaders in the global financial hub to seek fair wages for the country's million-plus lower-paid foreign workers, who make up a large part of the workforce. He said that he hoped “special attention” will be paid to the poor and the elderly, and that “the dignity” of migrant workers should be protected. “Singapore is a shining example of what humanity can achieve by working together in harmony, with a sense of responsibility and a spirit of inclusiveness and fraternity. I encourage you to continue on this path, trusting in God’s promise and his fatherly love for all," Pope Francis said. Francis' ambitious 12-day tour across Southeast Asia and Oceania has also included stops in Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, and East Timor. He returns to Rome on Friday.
