Pope meets with Israeli hostages freed by Hamas at the Vatican | ABS-CBN News

Pope Francis on Thursday (November 14) met a delegation of Israeli hostages freed by Hamas at the Vatican. Francis met Yelena Troufanov, whose husband was killed during the October 7 attack while her son, Sasha is yet held hostage. Pope also met Yocheved Lifshitz, a peace activist whose husband, Oded, is held hostage. Before the attack, Lifshitz and her husband were working as peace activists, volunteering to medically transport Palestinian patients from Gaza to Israeli hospitals. Hamas killed 1,200 people and abducted 250 others in last year's Oct. 7 attack on southern Israel. Hamas later released dozens of hostages held in Gaza in exchange for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners. Israel's retaliatory strikes on the Gaza Strip killed more than 43,000 Palestinians, reduced the enclave to a wasteland and unleashed a humanitarian catastrophe.
